| Starting a Wine Cellar
....what a fun idea!!
Ever wondered what it must be like to be able to dip into the cellar and choose from a selection of wines that would rival the list at a Michelin starred restaurant...and at about a half to one third of the price?
If you’re tending to eat and entertain at home rather more often nowadays, then you will realise that you can still eat very well and you can drink better wines, enjoy a better choice and, now that you are able to source them at much better prices, avoid the enormous restaurant mark-ups.
Of course there’s the need to invest some money...cellars don’t grow on trees you know...but you don’t need to do it all in one go. It’s eminently feasible and, in fact, more fun to gradually build your collection of wines by cherry picking all the wonderful, rare and sought after wines that we source at P&S.
The idea is to build up a reasonable quantity of wines across a range of styles, prices and “drink by” dates that will eventually ensure that you always have something exciting to drink, or offer your guests, without having to drink a bottle that’s too young or from a poor vintage. By planning for and investing in the future, you will drink better, more interesting and less expensive wines because you’ve taken the time to create this valuable asset. Also, there’s a load of fun involved in collecting wines and being able to drink them way after they have disappeared from the wine shops.
So, in order to make a start as simply as possible we have put together a suggested starter cellar that will create the core of your “stash”, which you can then simply add to over time and of course make the occasional discrete withdrawal. You put in at one end and take out at the other, so to speak.
This cellar is made up of wines that we have carefully selected for their style, quality and value for money, so you can be confident that each one really is worthy of being cellared. Not all wines need long term cellaring though, many are best drunk young and on the assumption that you will want to make a few “early withdrawals” we have also included some wines for drinking now and over the next year or two.
Finally, nowadays you don’t actually have to own a cellar in the form of a space beneath the house. Technology has advanced to the stage where you can buy a reliable, efficient and attractive temperature-controlled storage cabinet in a range of sizes to suit the size of your wine collection.
We recommend that you talk to the experts at “Around Wine” at 57 Chiltern Street, Marylebone, London W1, who are the UK’s leaders in temperature controlled wine storage equipment. They will be able to advise you on the best unit(s) for your needs.
