We were lucky enough to have a bottle of this wine for our staff Christmas dinner (December 2009). It was decanted about 2 hours in advance and still I thought it might be too closed to enjoy, but what a lovely wine and it showed absolute balance at this stage, which just shows how brilliant this vintage is. Already the monumental bouquet takes the breath away, it goes straight up to the frontal lobe and massages. I would definitely not recommend drinking it now – but I would definitely recommend you get your hands on any of the Massolino wines pronto and cellar them. These are world class wines that should be drunk in at least in 15 or 20 years time. It will be one of the most memorable and splendid wines on the planet then!
The 2005 was tasted in Jan 2010 and is very good indeed.
It’s always difficult tasting wines of this class in a room full of press and trade professionals all vying for the spittoon. And after you’ve tasted 50 or so other wines, you don’t expect them to offer up much to the tired palate - but not with the Massolino wines - the purity, sweetness and delicacy fairly sang. If you have missed cellaring 2004s, make sure you don’t miss out on any of Massolino’s 2005s.
Ripe nose, spices and flowers. Powerful, but voluptuous, fragrant, spicy, flowery. Very complex, very good. Delicate yet structured follow through to a full body, with balanced, silky tannins and a pretty finish.
