An impressive winery housed in the traditional renovated Masseria farmhouse in Puglia. The vineyards are in the Southern Salento just 20km from the Ionian and Adriatic, near Lecce, the cultural capital of the South. The Aglianico grape is grown all over Southern Italy and here it is teamed with Petit Verdot which results in a wine of sultry character and rustic charm. A saturated deep purple, almost black colour leads to a wine with an intoxicating mixture of perfumes with a background herbaceous note-like the smell of the vine once you've picked the cherry tomatoes off-sweetness, leafiness and dust. Masseria such as this are hugely popular places to stay and many have been transformed into luxury hotels and spas and are still the best places to eat in Puglia. The food is so good here that the whole region attracts foodies from all over Italy. A classic dish to serve with it would be Oriecciette "little ear" pasta tossed in broccoli, and anchovy sauce. |
