| Scarbolo was an exciting new find for us from our visit to Verona last month. Valter Scarbolo makes the full range of traditional Fruilano varietals Tocai Friulano, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in a style that we love: simple, uncluttered and fresh. Most producers in Friuli make a flagship white wine by blending three (or more) varieties together, these are some of the most fascinating wines of the region, much more than the sum of their component varieties. Valter's top white is an eccentric and super-charged white wine which together with the curious name will have you intrigued from the first sip. "My Time" is instantly jazzy and full of personality, wonderfully delicate with tremendous exotic fruit. La Frasca, in Lauzacco a casual roadside restaurant by Valter Scarbolo, who also doubles as a winemaker. Baked white asparagus pasta with egg cream, tagliatelle with poppy seeds and prosciutto. Valter speaks excellent English and walked us through our meal and his wines, of which there are many. His Scarbolo_XL_Ramato_Pinot_Grigio_2008". Pinot Grigio Ramato was a standout, not what people have come to expect from this grape: a copper colored wine with lots of fruit, body and spice." |
