| Grapes Tempranillo Garnacha Mazuelo and Graciano Style Maturing medium to light body. Crianza Riojas are the first ladder of real ageing in Rioja with a minimum of 3 years in barrel and a further 1 year in bottle required. Barrel ageing in the case of the light tempranillo grape adds tannins because oak has tannins as well as the grape skins themselves, another reason why oak is so crucial a container in red winemaking, the other is to soften the tannins. This 2005 is maturing nicely now, if you tip your glass, you can see a lovely gradation of colour from bright ruby in the core of the wine, to coffee colour at the rim, reminds me of worn in saddle leather. The Vina Cubillo has a wonderfully deep aroma too, savoury meats and perfumed fruits, it tastes a little bit like iberico ham itself, and just cries out to be partnered with it. Actually, when I first tasted it I was transported back to a tapas bar in Seville! Unlike a lot of tapas bar rioja staples that can be too oozy and warm, this has a refreshing, apetite boosting, quality that makes you want to go back for more. |
