One of the most interesting wines we've tried for a long time. Sicily's most elegant wines come from this small producer in the hills around Messina. The DOC wine Il Faro has been produced since the beginning of antiquity the locals proclaim, but it is really only in recent times and the devotion of Salvatore Geraci at Palari that Il Faro has become famous throughout the world. A tiny 6 hectare DOC, planted with the indigenous grapes Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Nocera, hand picked and labour-intensive and made with a rigorous attention to quality and detail, makes this one of Italy's most fascinating wines.n Fabulous complexity, beautifully knit, black cherry and a lightly smoky nuance shimmering in the background. It's elegance and finesse is at complete odds with the rest of the overly ripe southern Italian reds. Gorgeous stuff.
